April 11
We woke up this morning to the sound of rain. We got dressed and ready for a 4:30 am pickup at the motel. We went outside to wait and a truck drove in and a gent got out at told us that the Lesser Prairie Chicken lek outing was cancelled due to the rain, which everyone said was badly needed. The rain made the track to the lek too muddy. We thanked the fellow and all of us went back to bed until the breakfast meet up time of 8 am. I know I slept great those early morning hours.. The rain was continuing and so Jeff did some research and made suggestions for the day. Apparently there are only about 22 to 30 Lesser Prairie Chickens in Colorado while Kansas has much more. So here we are in Kansas. We hope to find the Lesser Prairie Chicken early tomorrow morning nearby this small town of Cimarron, Kansas.
So later in the morning the rain let up and we did some birding at the Lamar Community College Trail but it was very quiet. We then went on to the Thurston Reservoir which had many ducks including Clark's Grebe which was a lifer for some of us, along with Western Grebes and many Yellow-headed Blackbirds. It was so nice to see the Yellow-headed Blackbirds in the marshes around this reservoir. We probably could have stayed here longer but we had to move on to Cimarron where we are now. This is the prairies again and many of the fruit trees in bloom. The above photo is a small bush at the highway rest centre and the blossoms were so pretty.
The day ended in sunshine and tomorrow it is suposed to be sunny and quite nice, so we are hoping the Lesser will show up.
We ate at the town's cafe for supper this eveing and we got a hearty serving of a Turkey Dinner with the fixin's. Us girls have leftover Turkey for our lunches tomorrow.
The only glitch today was one of the Skevington car tires had a nail/bolt in it and they were lucky to find a garage that could patch it up in under an hour.
The adventure continues tomorrow!
