Today we birded the areas nearby to Wray Colorado, where we are staying. This included traveling through Haigler, Newbraska and Burlington, Kansas and up the 343 back to Wray. We saw several raptors and a Loggerhead Shrike and an Eastern Bluebird. It was windy and cool in the morning but made it up to 24 degrees in the afternoon. We had a nice picnic lunch, in the van on a dirt road and three trucks stopped asked us if everyone was OK. It was thoughtful yet kind of funny. We did not think it was unusual but we guess others did. Once we thought about it, it looked like we were having a tail-gate party on the dirt road.
We came back for around 4 pm as we had a meeting for the Greater Prairie Chicken Lek tour tomorrow morning at 6 pm this evening so we had to have supper early. We met up with our Colorado birding trip organizer, Jeff Skevington, his son Alexander , Jeff's Dad, Richard and Richard's birding buddy, Neil at the hotel. We went out to supper at the Fourth and Main Restaurant and we found it easily this time. The restaurant sign was up outside which it was not last night. The meeting went well and we are excited for tomorrow morning and we set our alarm for 3:45 am as we have to be on the bus by 4:45 am and we have to drive to get the bus. We have to be at the lek before dawn and STAY QUIET AND STILL! Sounds impossible.
So a short post today, we have to get to bed. The highlight of the day was the early morning drive to Nebraska, it was pretty, some of the fruit trees were starting to blossom and we were getting nice birds along the way.
We are really in the prairies here and they are spectacular.
